I have a freind who wants to sell a stock 2001 YZ85 that has very few hours on it. I'd have to guess it has about 30 original hours on it if that. It is in great condition except for rear end crash damage which I will fix. What is this worth after being fixed? So in perfect condition needing nothing what is a 2001 YZ85 worth?

Believe it or not the bike being in perfect condition is going to help out the prospective buyer more than the seller. We race the $hit out of these bikes here in Ok so here is a list of recent purchases.
03 KX 85 with Pro Circuit Pipe for $1,400
05 KX 85 for $1,500.
05 YZ 85 for $1,500
05 KX 85 with a bunch of mods for $1,700 still available
02 CR 80 $1,300
01 YZ 80 for $1,000...
By the market I have seen I would say the bike is worth between $900 and $1,250..

Thats about what I was guessing. It belonged to a kid that was 12, his first bike, he rode it once, and was tragically killed on it that day. He suffered a broken skull even though he was wearing a helmet. His dad bought it from the original owner who's kid broke his arm on it the fouth time out so he sold it to my freind who's son was killed on it. Sad story for sure man!

I don't understand why some parents would by a yz 85 or something like that for a beginner? Or why some think that the kid will grow into it. Sad! :infrandom

Because they are macho dumbasses, IMHO. He asked his brother for advice on the bike, and actually the plot thickens, it was his (the dad's) brother, same brother that gave him the bad bike advice, who hit his son and they both died. The dumbass uncle from a broken neck, the son from massive head injuries. This guy KNOWS I am and have allways been into motorcycles, but neglected to ask me for any advice when he bought the absolute worst bike for his son to "learn" on. He may as well have bought his kid a Turbo notros Busa! I would have said he shold get him a TTR90, but NOT a YZ! Shoot, any parrent who buys a new rider a YZ80~85 for their kid is ASKING to have the kid hurt badly or killed.

I saw a stat once on first time motorcycle buyers who dies in the first year of motorcycle ownership. And the trend took a sharp up-ward trend in the mid eighties, which corosponds directly with the GSXR and FZR serries.
